Last Surviving Gorillas

Common Info Mountain Gorillas are the minor of the two subspecies of eastern Gorilla (the other being Eastern Lowland Gorilla). These gorillas mainly have two concentrations, namely the Virunga volacnic mountains in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo regions of Central Africa and in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. There are only 700 mountain gorillas that are remaining on the face of earth today. Uganda, Rwanda and Congo have signed an agreement for the conservation of these gorillas. Common Info Mahale National park (area: 1,613 square kilometres) is located on the banks of Lake Tanganyika in western part of Tanzania. The national park has been named after the Mahale Mountain ranges that are located within its territory. The Mahale National Park is known to be one of the largest chimpanzee habitats in the world. In Tanzania, this national park is one of the only two protected areas for chimpanzees (thanks to its big size and remote location), the other being the Gombe Stream National Park. Common Info: An old colonial plantation, Asa Wright has been converted into a nature resort and scientific research today. Asa Wright Nature Centre is located in the Arima Valley in the Northern Range in Trinidad and Tobago. Owned by a non-profit making trust, the nature centre is one of the best birdwatching spots in the Caribbean. It is located at a height of 1,200 feet above the sea level. The major properties of Asa Wright are the Spring Hill Estate and the William Beebe Tropical Research Station. Recently the centre has also acquired the Rapsey Estate in the Aripo Valley, west of the Arima Valley. The centre has 108 mammals; 460 birds; 55 reptiles; 25 amphibians; and 617 butterflies and undoubtedly presents the biggest fauna diversity in the West Indies.
