The Victoria Falls – The Thunder Of Mists

The Victoria Falls, is the largest water fall in terms of its width, which about 1.7 kilometers wide and its height, about 108 meters. The first European to spot the falls, which are also known officially as Mosi-oa-Tunya in Zambia was the Scottish explorer David Livingstone. Mosi Oa Tunya means Mist of Thunders or Smoke of Thunders. Livingstone was the one who also gave it the name Victoria Falls in honour of Queen Victoria. The falls go by the name of Victoria Falls and are used as such officially in Zimbabwe. The Victoria Falls is on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe in South Africa. The Zambezi River is the source of this water fall. The Palancer Reef is a popular diving spot in the Mexican Island of Cozumel. The Island, in fact is a diving destination with a number of excellent diving spots that it is home to, thanks to its reefs and the current that assures clear visibility. Angel Falls Venezuela – Majestic

It was on 16 November, 1933 that these magnificent falls where chanced upon by the American aviator Jimmie Angle while on his search for a valuable ore bed.  He returned on October 9, 1937 with his wife and two other companions, but the plane was damaged while he tried to land atop Auyantepui. Eventually, it took them 11 days by foot to descend the Tepui. This news spread and the falls came to be known as Angel Falls in his honour. Angel’s flamingo mono plane now can be spotted in front of the airport at Ciudad Bolivar. There is a replica of this plane that sits on top of Tepui, or the Table Top Mountain. The indigenous Pemon name for Angel Falls is Parakupa-vena or Kerepakurai meru, which means the fall from the highest point. In Spanish it is known as the Salto Angel. Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago 73,753 square kilometers off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. In Spanish, Tierra del Fuego means the Land of Fire. Before the Boundary treaty of 1881, Argentina and Chile claimed the entire country. Since 1881, Chile has about 62 per cent of Tierra del Fuego‘s land under its control and the rest belongs to Argentina. It is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. The story behind its name says that the famous navigator Hernando de Magallanes saw bonfires on this island, which actually were the flames burnt by the Ona and Yaghan tribes, the natives, for their warmth and called the island the land of fire.
