He is believed to be the three incarnations of the Lord Datta Guru. The other two incarnations are the Shri Sai Baba shirdi and the other guru Shri Swami Samarth, Akalkot.
In the year 1878, Shri Gajanan Maharaj was noticed in the region of Shegaon. People have apparently benefited a lot because of his simplicity, spiritual strength and knowledge. There are some histories which say that the Maharaj actually ran away from his house as a child of 12 years. He is believed to have been born to Shahubai and Bhavaniram. It is also said that the original name of this saint was Gana Sable. Also it is said that this Maharaj spent some time in the Swami Samarth Ashram in Akkalkot for some time. This Maharaj is said to have spent a lot of time in the Akot jungles without any clothes on his body. He was in deep mediation when a nomadic woman touched his feet. Maharaj had great control and didn’t allow to get distracted. Thus was his power.
