Peter Island – Sandy White Beach

Posted On January 21, 2010

The British Virgin Islands, located 1200 miles to the southeast of Miami and 70 miles east of Puerto Rico, is home to many beautiful beaches. One of them is the White Bay Beach, at the Peter Island here, which runs along the Sir Francis Drake Channel.

The Island is five miles south of Tortola. It is the fifth largest Island in British Virgin Islands, and the largest private one, covering an area of about 1800 acres.

Peter IslandPeter Island was named after Peiter Adriensen, brother of Abraham Adriensen – Tortola’s patron under the Dutch West India Company in the early 17th century.

On the south, or at the back-side of Peter Island is the secluded beach of White Bay.

When to visit

With a sub-tropical climate, the British Virgin Islands are good in anytime of the year. The months from September to December are the wettest months here and that of February to April, the driest. June to November is the hurricane season.

How to reach

The airport nearest to Peter Island is the Beef Island Airport in Tortola, well-connected to other Islands in this group of Islands. From there, you can take a yacht to reach Peter Island or fly as well. Once in this Island, you can hike a hill or take a private boat tour to reach the White Bay Beach.

Activities at the White Bay BeachWhite Bay Beach

The journey to the White Bay Beach can itself be a thrilling experience. You can hike the way, bike through it or enjoy short complimentary van rides en route. The coral reefs and the crystal waters make this beach an excellent site for scuba diving or snorkeling.  You can spot the endangered sea turtles here, near the reefs. Iguanas too can be seen around the plants here.

If you are not a great water sport enthusiast, this Caribbean Beach offers a great stretch of picnic spot by the sea. Put up a hammock, have a nice time sunbathing while reading to yourself or enjoy a stroll on the sand by the blue sea.

Whether you want a quiet time by yourself, or you want to enjoy a vacation with your family and kids, the White Bay Beach is worth spending a day at, complete with a small hotel and beach bars.

Money BayIt would not be a bad idea to explore the other beaches of Peter Island while there. Deadman’s Bay is one of them, in the heart of the Peter Island Resort. The Buttonwood Bay and the Money Bay in Norman Island are other beaches you should spend some time at.

All these beaches in Peter Island are a good place for snorkeling and other water sports.
