Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary (RAKWS) was officially declared a protected area in 1998. The sanctuary, spread over an area of 6.2 square kilometres and surrounded by a buffer zone, is home to 47 flora and 266 fauna species including crustaceans, small mammals and fishes.
